Iḥya Uloom (translation The Revival of Knowledge Arabic: إحياءعلوم) is an 11th-century book written by Abu Ḥamid Muḥammad ibnMuḥammadal-Ghazali.The book was composed in Arabic and was basedon personalreligious experience. It is regarded as one of hischief works and aclassic introduction to the pious muslim's way toGod. Originallyspanning over 40 volumes, it deals with theprinciples and practicesof Islam and demonstrates how these can bemade the basis of areflective religious life, thereby attainingthe higher stages ofSufism. Some consider Kimiya-ye Saadat as arewrite of this work,which is a common misconception. Kimya-yeSaadat is shorter thanthis, however Ghazali said that he wrote theformer to reflect thenature of the latter and a few of his othertheological writings.The book is divided into four parts, eachcontaining ten books. Itexplains the doctrines and practices ofIslam and showed how thesecan be made the basis of a profounddevotional life, leading to thehigher stages of Sufism ormysticism.
